Antonia with her yellow suitcase

Local Western Province nurse, Antonia, has a new sense of joy and love for her work since receiving a solar suitcase from YWAM Medical Ships – Australia (YWAM MSA) last September. The solar suitcase, designed and made by We Care Solar, is outfitted with solar-powered lights, battery chargers, a phone charger, headlamps, and a fetal doppler to monitor a baby’s heartbeat.

Antonia is the head nurse and midwife at Emeti Health Centre; the main clinic for most of the Bamu Region. She sees several maternal health patients each month for antenatal check ups and deliveries. Up until September last year, Antonia was delivering babies with only a small torchlight.

YWAM MSA had the opportunity to return to Emeti this month to get Antonia’s feedback on the suitcase. The “yellow” suitcase, as Antonia calls it, is definitely being put to work. “I am so lucky,” Antonia says, “Each month I deliver four to five babies in the night. The lights make it so much easier and more safe.”

“I love to use the doppler on new mothers, they always smile so much when they hear their baby’s heartbeat.” Antonia shares.

Emeti Health Centre was the first recipient of the solar suitcase in the Western Province.
