YWAM Celebrates International Volunteer Day

Personnel aboard YWAM Medical Ships’ vessel MV YWAM PNG gathered on Tuesday to celebrate International Volunteer Day. YWAM staff personnel voluntarily donate their time and come from many nations. Among them are 22 Papua New Guineans currently serving aboard.

“It is such a special team atmosphere as we all come together and use our strengths to serve our nation,” said Annette Gele, a galley hand who first began volunteering with YWAM Medical Ships in 2016.

“I love the fact that I can use my skills, and learn new skills, while connecting with other Papua New Guineans and our international friends and really making a difference in remote parts of the country.”

“There is something really satisfying about joining together, not because we are focused on clocking in and out of work for a paycheck, but everyone is really here with their heart invested in the work. It’s much more than a job. I love the opportunity to volunteer. And I’m growing a lot in skills for the future as well!”

So far in 2017, over 470 volunteers have served with the YWAM Medical Ships program in Papua New Guinea; 76 of these have been Papua New Guineans.

“We are so grateful to every person who donates their time – and more than that, their heart – into this work,” said Ken Mulligan, YWAM Medical Ships Managing Director.

“As a volunteer myself now for several decades, I feel so privileged to work alongside this diverse group of incredible people, all united with a common purpose to bring hope to remote PNG. There is something very special about teamwork and having so many Papua New Guineans as part of our team is an important part of the fabric of YWAM.”

YWAM personnel also participated in a reception hosted by the National Volunteer Service on Tuesday evening, joining others in the volunteering sector to celebrate International Volunteer Day 2017.
